Whom not known it, and when this cultural object, known as the wicker chair and popularly called "chair" in Cyprus, was first produced. In the book Tanios Rock written by Amin Maalouf, information about the chair was included, so it is thought to cover a period from the 1800s to the present.
The use of the chair, which is produced by the herbal knitting method, is a type of seat unique to Cyprus, and varies on the island. In the 1940s, in coffee houses where men commonly socialized, in open-air cinemas in summer, at weddings, at homes. Today, to remind the past, it is known that the chair, widely used as decoration in the interior architecture of the houses in authentic places affected by the romantic movement, can be used for 40 years and carry almost 200 kilograms of weight when a real master makes it.
The first workshop for the production of the chair, which has become a cultural symbol in this sense, was established by Nevzat Salih in 1949 under the name of "Iskemleci". Today, this craft, which is continued by his son Özkan Öke and passed from father to son, is resisting to survive.
