The adaptation of fountains, which have an important place in the architectural culture of Cyprus, to island life started from the Ottoman period and continued to show its influence. Many of the fountains, which you come across while walking in the city center of Nicosia and Famagusta, were built by the rich and considerable people of the period for the benefit of the people. In these architectural structures, where soil and stone were used as materials in the early periods, marble was also used in the following years.

The fountains, located in central places in the village squares, varied in terms of usage area in line with the needs of the people. In regions and settlements where there were no river connections, fountains in stone boats with taps, filled with water carried from a nearby well or cistern, were also widely used. Especially at a certain hour, the conversations of the people of the village while gathering at the fountain and filling their jugs with water were one of the most important parts of social life.

As building types, materials and needs have changed, fountains continue to exist as a symbol of cultural memory in architecture. The fountain in Gave Square was built as a cultural object to represent these features and is open to use.
